Gels like teen spirit (By Craig Mathieson)
| Quote: | High school jams went a long way for Incubus, writes Craig Mathieson.
It's one thing to occasionally reflect on your childhood haunts but it's quite another to see them on a daily basis. For Jose Pasillas, the drummer with leading American rock band Incubus, the present constantly bleeds into the past. Pasillas still lives in Calabasas, outside Los Angeles, where he and several of his bandmates grew up and subsequently formed Incubus as teenagers in 1991.
''I can drive past somewhere where I did something really stupid at the age of 15 and if I want, I can still do it again at the age of 35 - it's just that I have kids' seats in the back of my car now,'' the genial percussionist laughs.
Pasillas is the only founding member of Incubus who stayed in Calabasas: he values the quiet locale, closeness to his family and the opportunity for his kids to go to the schools he did. If they're lucky, he figures, they'll make friends as important and lasting as Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd or guitarist Mike Einziger have been to him.

''We were friends previous to music,'' Pasillas recalls. ''I met Brandon when I was in fourth grade and we played commando and Rambo in our backyards and we grew up skateboarding and surfing together with Mike. We had lives together before music and, at first, it was just another common interest when we started jamming together at the age of 15.''
Those deeply held links have helped keep Incubus on the straight and narrow. In November, the band quietly celebrated 20 years together, marking the milestone with another gig on the extensive tour that followed the July release of their most recent album, If Not Now, When?
While the band has had line-up changes - turntablist Gavin Koppell was replaced by Chris Kilmore in 1998 and has since had several altercations with his successor - the core of Incubus has remained true to each other. According to Pasillas, they've never drifted apart in the past two decades.
''We're pretty grounded as people and we just take whatever comes,'' he says. ''I'm very fortunate to have found these people to play music and share these experiences with. We've kept it together for this long, so I'm confident that we can keep it together for a lot longer.''
The five-piece's endurance is partly due to their success never becoming overwhelming. Since the late 1990s and their breakthrough single, Drive, Incubus have sold millions of records and been a consistent live draw.
But they've never become the kind of behemoth that consists merely of a bunch of millionaires who intermittently stand together on stage.
When the group needed a long break following the release of 2006's Light Grenades album, they actually took one. If Not Now, When? is the band's seventh long-player and the first since a hiatus of several years ended with the band reuniting in the studio and discovering creative changes in each other.
''We were ready to write a record after spending time away, each doing our own thing,'' Pasillas says. ''We approached this record a little differently; we were more spontaneous in writing the music as we recorded it and that took us out of our comfort zone.''
The result puts aside their often-charged mix of guitar fury and electronic textures for mid-tempo grooves and contemplation. Pasillas holds the crucial groove in the pocket. ''We've always had elements of that sound but to do a record from beginning to end that sounded like that was different for us,'' he says.
''It's been a cool record to mix up with the old ones live.'' |
Brandon Boyd Lowers Asking Price on Venice Party Pad (By Crystal Spear)
| Quote: | Incubus front man Brandon Boyd has just relisted his home for $3.195 million; reduced from the $3.495 million it was listed for in December.
Formerly a 1940’s hotel, the property was remodeled as a residence. Complete with 12-foot high ceilings, exposed brick walls and a deck with spectacular ocean views, the Venice, CA home is the ultimate party house. We wonder if the new buyer will share Boyd’s passion or simply want to live like a rock star. |

its funny, that actually might be the most coherent, informative, and exciting interview from Brandon that I've read in a very long time.
Everything about the label is crazy, its exactly what I thought. And I would be moreeee than happy to see them do a Morning View Sessions pt 2 (not the sound, but the environment) and hear what they come up with. very very exciting! |

Yeah I really hope they follow through with that. Not sure what kind of music would come from that, not even going to try and guess, but that would be sick. Imagine the amazing making off DVD that would come with that album. _________________ -Jelger

thanks a lot. it's strange that brandon hates nu metal. i remember that brandon once said that korn was a special band for them and korn is like the band who started all that nu metal thing. |

He can still appreciate what Korn as a band might have done/meant for them, but hate the music they make. _________________ -Jelger

Just sayin', it's also possible that at, you know..like....18 he was totally into Numetal but now at almost 36 the shine is off the proverbial apple. _________________

| I'm speculating for the next album they will pay homage to a Morning View session at an abandoned chateau as Brandon referenced, and make something super experimental/atmospheric. My lord... That would honestly be amazing! |

Brandon sold his house!
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/feb/10/business/la-fi-hotprop-brandon-boyd-20120210
| Quote: | Frontman Brandon Boyd of the rock bank Incubus has sold his house in Venice for $2,705,454.
Originally a hotel and notions building when built in 1905, the property retains a storefront appearance. The 3,500-square-foot single-family home features exposed brick walls, pressed-tin ceilings, skylights, a glass-block exterior wall and a rooftop deck. There are three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The 640-square-foot sound-proof music studio/guest quarters includes a kitchenette.
Incubus recorded its seventh studio album at the house. "If Not Now, When?" was released last year.
Boyd, who helped form the alternative rock band more than two decades ago, sings, plays guitar and is a percussionist.
He bought the property in 2005 for $2.725 million from actress Maria Bello.
Brad Wiseman of Pinnacle Estate Properties was the listing agent and Negin Dumoulin of LeMarc Investments represented the buyer, according to the Multiple Listing Service. |
I'm glad he only had to sell it for less than $20,000 of its original value. |
